Tampa Bay Fishing Report: October is Peak Fishing Perfection!
October is easily one of my favorite times of year to take clients fishing in Tampa Bay. The shift to shorter days and cooler mornings acts like a massive trigger, setting off a whole smorgasbord of phenomenal action that is only surpassed by our legendary springtime fishery.
This month is truly a golden window for Tampa Bay fishing charters.
The Big Three Are Going Off
The cooling water temperatures mean massive changes for our inshore favorites:
- Redfish Schools are HUGE: October in Tampa means we are seeing huge, aggressive schools of Redfish. These powerful fish are actively gorging themselves, offering incredible opportunities for both sight fishing and heavy tackle action on the flats.
- Snook Return to the Creeks: The big Snook have finished their summer spawn and have now begun to work their way back from the beaches. We are finding them staged up in the mouths of creeks and rivers throughout Tampa Bay, preparing for the cooler weather ahead. This migration concentrates the fish and leads to explosive bites.
- Trout Fishing is Top Tier: Right now, Trout fishing is about as good as it gets. Almost every flat we are fishing has been holding large, healthy sized Spotted Sea Trout, providing continuous, consistent action on light tackle.
Pelagics Join the Feast
The action isn’t limited to the shallows. Our nearshore and offshore waters are also heating up as pelagic species start to show up in mass:
- Kingfish, Cobia, and Tripletail are all on the menu in October. These fast-moving, hard-fighting species are following the bait schools that stage just outside the passes. I fully expect to start putting clients on these exciting game fish at any point this month.
If you’re looking for the absolute best time of year to be outdoors, now is the time to go! The weather is perfect and the fishing is hot! Don’t miss this prime window to experience the best Tampa Bay fishing has to offer.
