Tampa Bay Fishing Report: Adapting to Warm Temps—The Spring Pattern Arrives Early!
This week of fishing has certainly proved to be more challenging than previous weeks, and it’s all due to our unseasonably above-average temperatures. This unexpected warmth has pushed a lot of fish around in the bay, making the action “hit or miss” in areas where we were recently catching upwards of 60 fish per day.
Rolling with the Punches: Switching to the Spring Pattern
As professional Tampa Fishing Charters, we have to roll with the punches. We quickly recognized the pattern and switched our strategy into an early spring warming trend approach. That ended up being the ticket!
By moving and adjusting our presentation, we are still finding excellent action. We are consistently catching a bunch of quality Spotted Sea Trout and big Redfish on the deeper grass flats and hard-bottom areas.
Sheepshead, Snapper, and Pompano Show Up in Force
While the “Big Three” are still biting, three other species have really showed up in numbers, providing fast action and filling the cooler:
- Sheepshead: These are thick around bridges and pilings, hitting small baits aggressively.
- Mangrove Snapper: Found on nearshore structure, these are providing excellent table fare.
- Pompano: Showing up on the beaches and passes, these highly sought-after fish are providing strong, fun fights on light tackle.
Looking Ahead
We seem to be in this warm holding pattern for at least a week or so, with no big fronts heading our way. This means the adaptive strategy of fishing structure and deeper, cooler pockets will remain key to a successful Tampa Bay fishing trip.
Don’t let the challenging bite stop you—we know where to find the fish! We have a few key dates open in February and March.
