Dive into summer with a treasure-hunt-like experience! The 2026 Homosassa Scallop Season promises an immersive, joyful, and potentially mouth-watering adventure in the crystal-clear waters off the coast of Florida. This aquatic escapade invites recreational harvesters to swap your daily grind for the thrill of hunting for the “Jewel of the Sea.”

Mark Your Calendar: 2026 Bay Scallops Season Dates

The bay scallops season is the time of year when Floridians and visitors descend upon the waters of Homosassa and Crystal River. While the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) confirms final dates annually, the season is historically stable for this prime harvesting region.

For the Homosassa/Crystal River area (Levy, Citrus, and Hernando counties), the expected 2026 season dates are:

  • Official Season Opener: July 1st, 2026
  • Season Closes: September 24th, 2026
  • Long-Weekend Opportunity: The season is expected to include the full Labor Day weekend.

The scalloping area includes all state waters from the Pasco-Hernando County line north to the Suwannee River. Please note that the season for Pasco County and other specific areas may differ, so always check the latest scalloping regulations from the Florida Fish and Wildlife website before you harvest scallops.

Understanding Scalloping Regulations and Bag Limits

All recreational harvesters must adhere to strict scalloping regulations and bag limits designed to ensure the future of this resource.

Limit TypeRegulation
Daily Bag Limit (Per Person)2 gallons of whole bay scallops in the shell OR 1 pint of shucked meat.
Vessel Limit (Max)10 gallons of whole bay scallops in the shell OR 1/2 gallon (4 pints) of shucked meat per boat.
License RequirementAll harvesters must possess a Florida saltwater fishing license unless legally exempt.

Collecting scallops is permitted only by hand or with a landing/dip net. We encourage careful harvesting around the crucial seagrass beds to protect the marine environment.

Why Booking with Local Guides is Essential

Book a local scalloping guide now

While it’s possible to embark on a scalloping trip on your own, booking a charter with local guides is the smartest decision for maximizing your harvest and safety.

A charter guide brings expertise and local knowledge to the table, which can greatly enhance your recreational bay scallop adventure. Our local guides are intimately familiar with the best scalloping grounds and can navigate the waters with ease, increasing your chances of a successful and enjoyable outing. They know exactly where the healthiest seagrass beds are flourishing in the Homosassa and Crystal River area.

Safety is another crucial factor for scalloping. Our fish and wildlife conservation-certified guides will ensure you receive the necessary guidance and instruction to stay safe while in the water. They can provide valuable tips on snorkeling techniques, how to spot and harvest scallops, and how to handle them properly once caught.

Moreover, local guides at FishnFL often provide all the essential gear, eliminating the need for you to purchase or rent equipment. This saves you time and effort and ensures you have high-quality gear suitable for collecting scallops in Florida’s Gulf Coast waters.
